Zagato: Top 10 masterpieces of the brand

Before considering Zagato’s masterpieces, one should also consider the history of this unique brand.

Zagato history

https://www.autoevolution.com

Founded in 1919 by Ugo Zagato, an aircraft engineer with a passion for performance, Zagato began crafting ultra-light, aerodynamic bodies for race cars. Instead of heavy steel, Ugo used aluminum – a bold move that made his designs faster, sleeker, and decades ahead of their time.

By the 1920s, Zagato teamed up with Alfa Romeo, and the magic began. Their 6C 1500 Sport Zagato won the Mille Miglia in 1928 – the first of many victories. Through the decades, Zagato became the secret sauce behind some of the most beautiful cars ever made, partnering with Ferrari, Aston Martin, Maserati, Lancia, and even Bentley.

Zagato is famous for its signature “double bubble” roof, a design born from necessity (to fit racing helmets!) and turned into an icon.

Fast forward to today, and Zagato remains an exclusive atelier blending Italian artistry with raw speed. Each car? A sculpture on wheels. Limited, luxurious, and unmistakably Zagato.

This Alfa Romeo is called the 2-nd Mostro, but unlike the 1-st Mostro (Maserati), this car was called the Italian Batmobile and its design was created on a computer (this was in the 1980s!). The car also received a very rare RZ (roadster) version.

The favorite of our top is the Alfa Romeo Tz2. A car that combines not only all the experience of Zagato but also all the best features of Alfa Romeo. It’s a pity that the Tz2 was a purely racing model and did not have a road version, it is also the first Alfa Romeo made entirely of fiberglass. An engine with two spark plugs per cylinder and a weight of 620 kilograms is the ideal formula for the success of a racing car.
