The history of the Porsche 928 began with an ambitious plan to replace the legendary 911. In the 1970s, the company’s management believed that the era of rear-engine cars was over. New safety standards in the USA could simply ban the old layout. Therefore, engineers created a luxurious Gran Turismo coupe with a front engine.
The debut in 1977 in Geneva was a real sensation. The car received a streamlined “shark” body and futuristic headlights. Technically, it was a real masterpiece. It became the first Porsche with an aluminum V8 and water cooling. The Transaxle scheme provided an ideal 50/50 weight distribution.
In 1978, the model received the title of “European Car of the Year“. This is the only sports car in history to win this award. The rear suspension “Weissach” was a special pride. It automatically steered in corners, making the car extremely stable.
Despite its success, the 928 failed to replace the classic 911. Fans of the brand considered it too complex and expensive. The car became a symbol of the elite and a Hollywood star. For example, it was driven by Tom Cruise’s character in the movie “Risky Business“. Production lasted 18 years and ended with a powerful version of the GTS.

New 2026 Porsche 928

The design of the new Porsche 928 2026 combines a lot of unique design solutions. Let’s start with the fact that the long hood for Porsche cars is a unique thing that is no longer found, which makes the new 928 even more unique. The headlights have also become unique, they are larger, not round, but inspired by the new Taycan (picture 2) and somewhat resemble the Carrera GT (picture 1). It is also worth mentioning the stylish “928” logo in picture number 1. As for the rear hatch, it looks as simple as possible, which contrasts nicely with the front.
