BMW 501 is one of the most iconic yet underrated BMWs in the post-World War II era. Simply put, it was first luxury sedan after 1945, designed to compete with Mercedes-Benz in the premium segment.
Key points in its history:
-
Production: 1952–1958.
-
Nickname: “Baroque Angel” because of its flowing, massive, almost sculptural body design.
-
Price & sales: It was extremely expensive for post-war Germany, so it sold poorly—about 2,000 units total.
-
Features: Innovative suspension for a smooth ride, luxurious interior, and a cockpit-style instrument panel.
The problem was that BMW tried to make a high-end luxury sedan when the market wasn’t ready yet—people couldn’t afford it, even though it was gorgeous and technically advanced. That’s why it became a legend: a car that was beautiful, innovative, but commercially unsuccessful.
Bmw 501 specifications: Power: 100 hp (2.6 L V8, later models) Acceleration: 0–100 km/h in ~16–18 s
Top Speed: ~160 km/h
Engine: 2.6 L V8 (M337), initially 2.0 L V8 with 65 hp
Range: ~400 km (depends on fuel tank and driving)
Dimensions: Length ~4,78 m, Width ~1,75 m, Height ~1,55 m
Technology: Independent front suspension, coil springs, advanced for early 1950s; luxury interior with aviation-style dashboard
Additional Features: High-quality leather and wood trim, “Baroque Angel” styling, heavy, sculptural body

No one will argue that the old 501 was an underrated legend, and since BMW is now unifying its design, it is logical to revive it as it would be the new BMW 6 Neue Class. In our opinion, it should still be more classic and without aggression like the original BMW 501. The new BMW 6 Neue Class has simply unique features that are almost not inherent in modern BMW’s (models 1,2,3,4) and very much resemble the original 501, among them, for example:
- Narrow nostrils.
- Smooth, classic shapes.
- Round headlights (models 1,3,4)
There is also 5.6, which is a car that looks like a BMW 3.0 csl with a classic but aggressive design like the new BMW’s. That is, if 1,2,3,4 is a concept restomod, then 5.6 is a more realistic representation of the car.
