Cars that saved brands from bankruptcy: Volkswagen Golf, Lamborghini Galardo and others

Today we’ll talk about cars that saved companies from extinction. If it weren’t for them, other legends wouldn’t exist.

VolkswaGen Golf: The most banal choice

Let’s play a game, name two old Volkswagens, most likely you named them: Volkswagen Beetle and Golf. And what was between them, the maximum that an average motorist would name is Volkswagen T2 or Karman Gia. Therefore, Volkswagen Golf is not just a car that saved the brand, we would simply forget about the existence of Volkswagen and it would be like DeLorean or Fisker. But Volkswagen produces Golf, which is still produced today.

1998 Lamborghini is on the verge of bankruptcy. The only living models are Diablo and Countach, but they are aging, sales are low, and there is zero money. In 1998 Audi buys Lamborghini. The reason is simple – technology + brand + exotics that can be monetized. They combined Audi technologies and did not lose Lamborghini traditions. As a result, the car saved the brand and became an advertisement for Audi. By the way, it was the same V10 from Audi that became the basis for the R8.

Tesla Model 3: Not a toy

2017 – Tesla is an idea company among their cars: Roadster (a small sports car could not be mass), Model S (large, bulky, not for every day) and Model X (the same as the S only with gull-wing doors). Tesla needed its Golf, otherwise it would cease to exist, this was most realized by Elon Musk, who lived at the factory during the development of the Model 3. Tesla 3 could not be a failure because it would put an end not just to the idea or the company, but to the era of electric cars that we have now. Ford Model T made cars affordable, 2CV revived automotive manufacturing after the war, and Model 3 mass electric cars.

The new 2026 BMW 501: modern BMW 6 Neue Class?

BMW 1500/ Neue Klasse(1961): The DNA of a driver’s car

https://gtspirit.com/

In the late 50s, BMW was almost bankrupt. They made motorcycles, strange luxury sedans, and microcars like the Isetta. In 1959, at a shareholders’ meeting, they seriously discussed taking over Daimler-Benz. There was almost no money. They put everything on one class of mid-size cars, instead of microcars. If the 1500 hadn’t come along, the company would have closed. There were no beautiful plans B. The BMW 1500 wasn’t “cool” in the modern sense. It was just right. And that was enough to keep the brand from disappearing.
